Book Recommendations on Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being present and fully engaged in the current moment, without judgment. For artists and creatives, mindfulness can:
Enhance focus and concentration, battling procrastination.
Reduce stress and anxiety in personal and professional life.
Foster a deeper connection to your creative process, and remove creative block.
Improve emotional regulation and resilience to any obstacle met on the way.
1. Breath Awareness
Breath awareness is a simple yet powerful technique. Throughout your day, you might encounter unexpected moments of doubt, anxiety, and stress inflicted by the slightest thing such as a rejection email. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Notice the sensation of the air entering and leaving your nostrils. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath. This practice helps to ground you, reminding your consciousness that you are alive and well, and the stress you feel is simply a projection of a fleeting panic.
2. Mindful Observation
Choose an object related to your creative work—an art piece, a tool, or something in nature. Try to choose an object that you might have overlooked otherwise or something you are seeing every day. Spend a few minutes observing it closely. Notice its colors, textures, shapes, and any details you might usually overlook. This practice can improve your attention to detail and inspire new ideas, as well as help you find beauty and grounding in the world surrounding you.
3. Body Scan Meditation
Body scan meditation helps you connect with your physical self and refresh your mind. I usually do this in the moment of doubt or confusion, when I am not sure if I am on the right path. Lie down or sit comfortably. Starting from your toes, slowly move your attention upward, noticing any sensations in each part of your body. To reduce tension and increase body awareness, you reconnect with your body and the present moment, as well as clear your mind to move towards your goals.
4. Mindful Movement
Incorporate mindful movement into your daily routine. This could be yoga, tai chi, or even a slow, mindful walk. Focus on the movements and how your body feels. Allow this time to be a safe space for you, a moment of calmness when you are untouchable to any problem lurking outside. I love practicing yoga daily, each morning allowing myself at least 15 minutes to enjoy the stillness and self-care that comes with it.
5. Journaling
Feeling stuck is normal, and the best way to get out of it is to clean up the mess (in this instance, a clutter of thoughts in your mind). Set aside time each day to journal mindfully. Write about your thoughts, feelings, and creative ideas without judgment. This practice can help you process emotions, clear mental clutter, and discover new creative insights.
